Installation Guide for BR/ER/SR Ferrule Fittings

Installation Features of BR/ER/SR Series Ferrule Fittings
The ferrule fitting secures the ferrule within the fitting’s tapered seat by tightening the nut, creating an effective seal as the ferrule grips the steel tube. Installation is straightforward and can be completed using only a wrench.
!! Proper installation of ferrule fittings is critical. To ensure optimal performance, manual installation should use a ferrule‑pre‑assembly tool, while for ferrules 22 mm and larger, a dedicated ferrule‑pre‑assembly machine is recommended. Using such a machine significantly enhances reliability and installation efficiency. For details on pre‑assembled fittings, see page 268; for the pre‑assembly machine, refer to pages 269–270.

A. Prepare steel pipes

1. The steel tubing used for ferrule fittings must be precision cold-drawn seamless steel tubing specifically designed for ferrule applications (see TR ferrule tubing on page 267 for technical requirements). To prevent the tubing from shrinking or deforming during ferrule tightening, the wall thickness must not be excessively thin (refer to page 267 for wall‑thickness specifications). If thin‑walled tubing must be used, insert a liner inside the tube (see page 261). [See Figure 1]
2. Cut the steel pipe vertically; the perpendicularity of the pipe end face to the pipe axis shall not exceed ±3°. After cutting, the roundness and diameter at the cut section must remain unaffected. [See Figure 2]

3. At the pipe ends, lightly deburr both the inner and outer surfaces; the permissible chamfer is 0.2 × 45°. [See Figure 3]

4. For bent pipes, the length from the end of the straight section to the bend shall be at least twice the height of the nut. [See Figure 4]
B. Pre-assembly of the ferrule
Method 1: Use the ferrule pre‑installation machine US‑FL‑MAN (see page 269) and the US‑FL (see page 270) to perform ferrule pre‑installation. For detailed installation instructions, refer to the pre‑installation machine’s operating manual.
Method 2: Perform the ferrule pre‑installation using the VOST pre‑installed fitting (see page 268).

1. Use the internal taper gauge KN (see page 268) to periodically inspect the VOST pre‑installed fittings for wear or deformation (inspect after every 50 ferrules are installed). [See Figure 5]

2. Insert the gauge into the internal taper of the VOST pre‑installed fitting; if the gauge’s face lies below the internal taper, the pre‑installed fitting is scrap. [See Figure 6]

3. Apply a small amount of stainless-steel‑specific thread lubricant PASTE‑L‑2/3S to the threads and tapered surfaces of the pre‑installed fittings, as well as to the nut threads and ferrule. (See page 268.) [Refer to Figures 7–9.]

4. Push the nut and ferrule onto the steel tube, ensuring that the ferrule is not installed in reverse. [See Figure 10]

5. Press the steel pipe firmly into the pre‑installed fitting, clamp the fitting in a bench vise, and hand‑tighten the nut onto the fitting to ensure the pipe is securely seated against the fitting. [See Figure 11]

6. If the nut cannot be turned by hand, mark both the nut and the steel pipe. [See Figure 12]

7. Continue tightening the nut with a wrench by approximately 1¼ turns; for BR ferrules, tighten by 1¼ to 1½ turns. For larger‑diameter steel pipes with a nominal diameter of Ø18 mm or greater, use an extended wrench (refer to page 186 for wrench length specifications). [See Figure 13]

C. Pre-Installation Inspection

1. Loosen the nut and check whether the ferrule has been fully inserted into the steel tube, and whether a distinct bulge has formed at the tube’s end, with the ferrule’s leading edge securely clamped around it. If the insertion is insufficient (the bulge is not pronounced), slightly tighten the nut further. [See Figure 14]

D. Final installation of the ferrule fitting in the pipeline

1. Insert the steel pipe, which has already been fitted with a ferrule, into the fitting to be connected. Use a wrench to tighten the nut until you feel a noticeable increase in resistance, then tighten it an additional approximately 1/4 turn. [See Figure 15]
